The MCP7940M I2CTM compatible real-time clock/calendar (RTCC) includes SRAM and a digital trim circuit for accuracy, normally found in more expensive components.
With a low-cost 32.768-kHz quartz crystal or a different clock source, the time is displayed either in a 12-hour or 24-hour format with AM/PM. The time is displayed in seconds, minutes, hours, day of the week, date, month and year. As an interrupt or wake-up signal, a multifunctional, open-drain output can be programmed as an alarm out or as a clock out with 4 selectable frequencies.
