The L6219 is a bipolar monolithic integrated circuit for controlling and driving the two coils of a bipolar stepper motor or a bidirectional controller of two DC motors. With just a few external components, the L6219 forms a complete control and drive circuit for LS-TTL- or microprocessor-controlled stepper motor systems. The power amplifier is a dual full bridge capable of sustaining 46-V rated voltage and including four diodes for current recirculation. Cross-conduction protection is included to prevent simultaneous cross conduction when the current direction is switched. Internal pulse width modulation (PWM) controls the output current to 750 mA at 1 A peak inrush current. Two binary inputs enable a wide current control range. A phase input to each bridge determines the load current direction. A thermal protection circuit disables the outputs if the chip exceeds the safe temperature.
