With the FT232RNL, FTDI is expanding its range of integrated circuits with a USB-UART interface. The FT232RNL is a USB-to-Serial UART interface with optional clock generator output and the new FTDIChip-ID™ security dongle function. Asynchronous and synchronous bit-bang interface modes are also available. USB-to-serial designs with the FT232RNL have been further simplified by fully integrating the external EEPROM, clock circuitry and USB resistors in the device.

The FT232RNL offers two new features compared to its predecessors, thereby effectively turning it into a "3-in-1" chip for some applications. The internally generated clock (6 MHz, 12 MHz, 24 MHz and 48 MHz) can be removed from the module and used to control a microcontroller or an external logic. A unique number (the FTDIChip-ID™) is burned into the device during manufacture and can be read out via USB. It provides the foundation for a security dongle that can be used to protect the customer's application software from copies.
